Excursions

Not only thanks to the charm of the small town of Kandern, but also thanks to its central location in the Markgräflerland – one of the warmest regions in Germany – and its proximity to France and Switzerland, Kandern is an ideal starting point for excursions to Alsace, Switzerland or the Black Forest. Whether on foot, by car or by public transport, you will always reach your destination.

Excursions in the immediate vicinity of Kandern

On foot

The little town invites you to stroll or window-shop along its many paths, lanes and pedestrian-friendly centre. Numerous hiking trails also lead past or through Kandern, such as the Planet Trail, the August Macke circular trail or the Kulturlandweg (you can find more circular routes and hiking options at Stadt Kandern).

Kandertalbahn

If you are tired of hiking but would still like to travel through the fascinating natural landscape of the southern Black Forest, why not take the train? And not just any train: Kandern is the start and end station of the historic steam train known as the “Kanderle”. More information about the Kandertalbahn can be found at www.kandertalbahn.de

The Black Forest

Germany’s highest and largest contiguous low mountain range invites you to go hiking, cycling and, in winter, skiing or cross-country skiing. The Black Forest also has plenty of sights to offer. Why not visit Germany’s highest waterfalls, take a walk around Lake Titisee, or spend a day at the Vogtsbauernhof open-air museum? More information at www.schwarzwald.de

Swimming

In summer and winter alike you can visit one of the many swimming pools and thermal baths in the area. The local outdoor pool is of course only open in summer, but you will not have to miss out on swimming in winter either:

  • Laguna Badeland
  • Balinea Thermen
  • Cassiopeia Thermen
  • Sole uno (Switzerland)

Cycling

You can get around a gear faster if you rent a bicycle: Velo Ziped

Tennis

Do you enjoy playing tennis? In Kandern, too, you can spend a few hours on the court after booking in advance. The tennis court in Kandern is located right next to the swimming pool. Kandern tennis court phone number: 07626 / 6506 or 7518.

Golf

Right on the edge of town, an 18-hole golf course covers around 72 hectares and may also be used by guests for a fee. More info at: www.golfclub-markgraeflerland.com

Sausenburg

Medieval flair, a breathtaking view, pure nature. Behind our house, the forest path leads directly to the Sausenburg castle ruins. A brisk walk of 20–30 minutes, and you can enjoy the breathtaking view from the accessible castle tower on the Sausenberg. There is also a barbecue area.

Basel

The Swiss metropolis of Basel is just a stone’s throw away. Not only the historic old town with its pedestrian zones and the Minster are worth a visit – Basel also has a great many museums. More information: www.basel.com
